Just 30 minutes south of Barcelona, Sitges hosts various gay events and warmly welcomes LGBTQ travellers from around the world. Sitges has over 25 sandy and rocky beaches (including nude gay beaches), classical architecture, endless parties, ready-to-serve gourmet food and a beautiful Mediterranean climate.
Sitges is regarded as a long-standing gay paradise. The first gay bar in Spain was opened here in the 1970s and there’s even a gay monument on the gay beach, la Playa de la Bossa Rodona. Sitges is a pretty small town, so there’s no one gay area: you’ll find LGBT life buzzing throughout this beautiful place.
Summer in gay Sitges
Aside from being “the gayest town” in Europe for decades, Sitges has been a destination for artists since the early 19th century due to its artistic beauty, with such painters as Picasso, Dali and Miro, as well as writer Tennessee Williams and actor Douglas Fairbanks. This famous shore, renowned as bohemian hangout, keeps a number of art galleries and museums as heritage for the art fans.
The best time to enjoy gay Sitges would be in spring and summer. But you’ll be surprised even if you come during winter: special events like Sitges Gay Carnival, one of the best-known gay events in Europe, takes place during February. And, for the bear lovers, Sitges Bear Week happens twice a year, in late April and early September. Other fun events, like Sitges Gay Pride in June, Sitges Oktoberfest in October and so much more will keep you wanting to stay and enjoy Sitges all year round.
